Breast Filler guide

What is breast filler?

Breast filler is the injection of filler into the breast to increase volume without surgery. Hyaluronic acid is the substance most often used, in much larger amounts than in the face. Because the body gradually breaks it down, the effect is temporary.

Health authorities are cautious about this treatment. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not approved dermal fillers for breast enlargement and advises against this use. In 2012, the manufacturer of a hyaluronic acid product developed for the breast stopped its use there, mainly because of concerns about breast imaging. Injectable liquid silicone is not approved for any cosmetic use and can cause serious harm, including death.

How is breast filler injected?

The procedure usually takes about an hour and is done under local anaesthesia.

  1. Examination: The breasts are examined, and your personal and family history of breast disease is reviewed. Breast imaging may be requested beforehand.
  2. Information: The product, amount, expected duration, imaging concerns and risks are explained, and written consent is taken.
  3. Anaesthesia: Local anaesthetic is injected at the entry points.
  4. Injection: Filler is placed with a blunt cannula, usually behind the breast tissue, in front of the chest muscle.
  5. Aftercare: A supportive bra is usually advised and a follow-up visit is planned.

Who might consider breast filler, and who should not?

Breast filler is sometimes requested by people who want a small, temporary change and do not want surgery. Given the safety warnings, many doctors do not offer it and suggest other options instead.

  • A personal or family history of breast cancer
  • A breast condition that needs regular imaging
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • Infection in the area or a bleeding disorder
  • An earlier filler of unknown content in the breast
  • Expectations of a large increase in size

In these situations the treatment is not advised. Suitability can only be judged after an examination by a doctor.

How long does breast filler last, and what is recovery like?

The effect is temporary and varies widely from person to person, so repeat injections are needed to maintain it. Swelling, tenderness and bruising usually last a few days, and most people return to daily activities within about five days. Strenuous exercise and pressure on the breasts are usually limited at first. Filler can move, become uneven or form lumps over time.

Anyone who has had breast filler should tell the doctor or radiographer at every breast examination and mammogram.

What are the risks of breast filler?

The main concerns are:

  • Interference with mammograms, ultrasound or MRI, making a lump harder to detect
  • Filler appearing as a suspicious area, leading to extra tests or biopsy
  • Lumps, hardness and uneven shape
  • Filler moving out of place, asymmetry
  • Infection and abscess, sometimes needing drainage
  • Capsule formation around the filler
  • Serious and permanent harm from liquid silicone or products of unknown origin

Pain, redness, fever or a new lump after treatment should be checked by a doctor.

How does breast filler compare with surgical options?

Implants and fat transfer are the established methods of breast enlargement. They require surgery but have a longer track record and clearer follow-up guidance.

What affects the cost, and how do you choose a doctor?

The cost depends on the amount of product, the product type, the doctor's experience, the city and the need for repeat sessions. The exact fee is set after an examination. Choose a specialist in plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery who explains the safety warnings and surgical alternatives openly. Ask to see the product box and batch number, how imaging will be managed in the future and what will be done if lumps or infection develop. You can compare them in the doctor list by city.

Breast Filler Frequently Asked Questions

Is breast filler approved?
The FDA has not approved dermal fillers for breast enlargement and advises against this use. A product developed for the breast was withdrawn from breast use in 2012. Many doctors suggest implants or fat transfer instead.
Does breast filler affect mammograms?
Yes, filler in the breast can make mammograms and other imaging harder to read. It may hide a lump or look like a suspicious area. Always tell the radiology team that you have had breast filler.
How much bigger can breast filler make the breasts?
Breast filler can give only a small increase in volume. Larger changes need very large amounts, which raises the risks. Implants or fat transfer are used for a bigger change.
Can breast filler be dissolved?
Hyaluronic acid can usually be broken down with hyaluronidase, but large volumes in the breast may not dissolve completely. Lumps or infection sometimes need drainage. Permanent substances cannot be dissolved.
Can I breastfeed after breast filler?
There is little reliable information on breastfeeding after breast filler. The filler is placed behind the breast tissue, but lumps or infection could cause problems. Discuss future breastfeeding plans with your doctor before treatment.
